12.04 Raring HWE update killed installation

I followed instructions in the announcement of the Raring Hardware Enablement Stack to update my installation with

Code:
sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-raring xserver-xorg-lts-raring
When I try to start the system now it shows briefly some dots and the coloured word "Ubuntu". Then the screen turns black with a blinking cursor in the upper left and the machine stops reacting to anything except the off-switch. The older kernels GRUB offers can't be booted either.

During installation of the update I got an error, saying "fglrx" couldn't be installed. So, is "radeon" dead, too? How to proceed from here?

Solved.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Okay, this is a multi-boot setup with GRUB2 in a separate boot partition to handle it all. Ubuntu installs its boot loader locally under its root directory from where it is not(!) chainloaded.

Consequently I loaded the old kernel which obviously has problems with the new graphics. Pointing GRUB2 to the new kernel re-enabled boot...

Sorry and thanks to everybody who had a look at my "problem".
