kernel update killed alsa:(

hello all,

I had got sound working on my HP dv9500t laptop, which took a long time. The other day I noticed that I had updates to load. So I went ahead and did the updates, including the kernel update.
Code:
uname -a
Linux TUX-lama 2.6.22.17-0.1-default #1 SMP 2008/02/10 20:01:04 UTC x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
When I came to play my mp3's I heard nothing. I checked YaST for the alsa driver Kernel but it wasn't installed any more. I tried to reload this and I get conflict errors.

Any help would be great.

Cheers,

Paul

do you use KDE?

kde info can list sound modules , irqs
kde control center and test your sound and you can recheck you are using alsa.

using root powers you can also check your soundcard name
lspci

it must be either inbuilt or module. if module it will show up under
lsmod

Code:
su
lspci > /home/yourname/lspci
lsmod > /home/yourname/lsmod
post these outputs pls.

2) if its your kernel you can check /boot/config scroll down to
# Sound
#
CONFIG_SOUND=y

#
# Advanced Linux Sound Architecture
and its contents

and search for your card from kde info or pci lower down in
# PCI devices

3) but you mention mp3.

do you get any sound with any other sound file?

if so, its your player and codecs and not the kernel per se

Sorry for the delay post. I havn't been able to get onto linuxquestions in quite some time. Anyway, here is the output. I've tried since loading alsa with Yast but no luck. I feel a little bad as the output from lsmod is quite long. but here it is

cheers,

Paul

ok in summary
your alsa are modules

but you lack modules
sound and soundcore

your audio is Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)

ich8 is the keyword and I can not see your sound module for ich8 in modules.....hmmm.

---------------------------------------------
according to a few searches I have done...your sound can be done with alsa as per
http://www.alsa-project.org/main/ind...dule-hda-intel

------------------------
search of HCL shows similar chipsets and read the sound if above no good
http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl/sh...t/4080/cat/all

----------------------------------

now you may have the module already built....

open a shell su to root and try
Code:
modprobe snd_hda_intel
lsmod
do not post all of that lsmod from now on pls. but read it and see if snd_hda_intel loads, if it loads, so should soundcore.

2) pls report if it loads or fails

ok so I had a look through the site that you gave me. I tried the first command on the site 'modinfo soundcore' which told me that it was installed. Below is the lsmod command.

Code:
lsmod | grep snd_hda_intel
snd_hda_intel 369060 1
snd_pcm 108680 2 snd_pcm_oss,snd_hda_intel
snd 84984 9 snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_seq,snd_seq_device,snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm,snd_timer
snd_page_alloc 28048 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm

Thanks.

Hi,

I also have an HP 95xxea openSuSE 10.3 64 bits (I do not remember what are the exact model number but it is an ea, European model with the Intel 82801 ich8 hda controller).
I was working with the drivers and noticed that I also had the soundcore installed and your post just showed me what was wrong!
