Question Yast goes unconsious after checking dependencies Suse 10 OSS

Initially I installed SuSE 10 eval the other day.
After buggering it up I reinstalled, switching to gnome desktop from kde (just to try it out).

Yast started being a bit iffy in this new install, when I tried adding things from a folder on the desktop (win32, mplayer etc).

Sometimes it would work but other times it would get me to log in open the yast window say
'reading packages'
then
'checking dependancies'
then I would just be left with an open Yast window doing nothing.

I assumed it was a gnome linked bug, because it had worked in my first install when I had kde selected as the desktop.
I decided to reinstall last evening using the 'released' OSS Vs 10.0.

But it's doing the same thing.
I tried it with gnome and again with KDE, however it does this consistently now, no indication of anything being installed, nothing.

N.B The Yast window is not frozen it's just having a permenant rest.

What did I do to cause this? Or am I just cursed?

Thanks

It's hard to tell. I don't work in GNOME, so I don't have much experience here. But you should have a look at the YaST logfiles. These are /var/log/YaST2/y2log and ~/.y2log. Maybe you find some suspicious entry at the end of the file after your last lockup. If it doesn't tell you anything, post it here (not the complete file, please).

Hi thanks for responding
The last install was with KDE not Gnome and same problem.
However it won't let me log into linux via the GUI (I think thats what it's called) it will only let me log in in text mode.

So I am redownloading the eval version from bittorrent in the hope that it will be a better copy. (It says it checks the files)

So I will see if that solves the problem.
6hrs to go

But that's a new problem, right? As in the beginning you said you've installed software from your desktop. Usually this can be solved by confiuration with sax2. In the textmode, login as root and type 'init 3', then 'sax2'.
