YaST does not work

Please help, as i'm very new to SuSE (9.2) Linux. I've had it installed for about 6 months now, but when i go to YaST to perform an update, i can connect and update, but i get an error after the "Delta...Ok" happens. Then, all i can do is skip the patch or abort. i've tried this several times, using different sites. ANY ideas will greatly be appreciated. In the event you suggest doing something via the root directory, could you please be very descriptive (treat me like i'm 4 and tell me exactly what to do), as i said before, i'm new to this.

You have to tell us what the exact message is, otherwise no one will be able to help you.

It's like taking your car to the mechanic & saying "It doesn't work". Is it out of gas? Did someone steal the tires? Does it make a funny noise when you start it? What's the problem?

i log into YAST and enter the root password.
then i point the location i want to go to, for example,
1) ftp://suse.mirrors.tds.net/pub/suse
2) manually select packages
3) wait for info. about new packages
4) lots of RED items are checked, for this example, i will only attempt to install "security update for xine"
5) YAST retrieves the update, but here is what i get:

"security update for xine"...Ok
Applying delta...Ok"
"Installing xine-ui:"security update for xine" Error

6) The only options i get are: Error installing the
patch 'xine-ui'

7) my only options at this point are a) try again, b) skip patch, c) skip all, or d) abort.

8) there are details, which show the following:

ERROR(InstTarget:E_RpmDB_subprocess_failed)
rpmdb: PANIC: Invalid argument
rpmdb: fatal region error detected; run recovery
rpmdb: fatal region error detected; run recovery
rpmdb: fatal region error detected; run recovery
rpmdb: fatal region error detected; run recovery
error: db4 error(-30982) from dbcursor->c_put: DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error, run database recovery
error: error(-30982) storing record into Requireversion
rpmdb: fatal region error detected; run recovery
error: db4 error(-30982) from dbcursor->c_get: DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error, run database recovery
error: error(-30982) getting "" records from Requireversion index
rpmdb: fatal region error detected; run recovery
error: db4 error(-30982) from dbcursor->c_get: DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error, run database recovery
error: error(-30982) getting "" records from Requireversion index
rpmdb: fatal region error detected; run recovery

---it goes on like this for pages....

ANY help would be MASSIVELY appreciated.

i'm basically trying to update anything in RED!

thanks again,
Mark

It sounds like your rpm database is damaged. You could try logging in a root, and at the # prompt key 'rpm --rebuilddb'. Or even 'rpm --initdb' to initialize the database completely, then the 'rpm --rebuilddb' to rebuild it.

Warning: I don't know if this will work, do nothing or even make your problem worse. It's just my best guess at what to do next. If no one else has any other suggestions, then you might have to go for it.

Good luck!
