SuSE not auto-recognising ethernet adaptor at boot

Hi all. I'm having a problem in that, when I start SuSE, my LAN connection doesn't automatically come on. I've checked in YaST and do have the 'enable at boot-up' option ticked for the ethernet adaptor I'm using (Intel 82573L Gigabit Ethernet), but every time I reboot I have to get YaST to re-recognise the adaptor.

I'm running SuSE 10.0 and, when I first installed it I couldn't connect at all, even though SuSE appeared to recognise the ethernet adaptor through YaST, giving it the correct name. This problem was solved by downloading new drivers from the Intel site. However, the drivers just don't seem to be recognised at boot-up.

Has anyone any ideas on this? Is there some kind of config file I can edit or something? By the way, I'm still fairly new to Linux so may need any fix spelled out as for a small child

Hello and welcome to LQ, hope you like it here.

Is there some kind of config file I can edit or something?
Reboot the box so we have the device in the unrecognised state.
Open up a terminal window and type "modprobe -v modulename" (no quotes) where modulename is probably something like "e1000.ko" (you know what it is, you installed it ;-p). If that doesn't say anything or returns an error type "uname -r" to show you the version of the current kernel. Now type "slocate modulename". If modulename isn't in the path /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/ you will have to move it to say /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/net/ or equivalent. If the module *is* there, then type "grep modulename /etc/modprobe.conf". This should return a line like "alias eth0 modulename". If the line isn't there then add it. Restart your network and all should be OK (I think ;-p).

Thanks very much for this. Actually I'll be away from my Linux machine for the next week or two, but I'll try this when I get back and let you know how it goes.

Hello there. I'd been thinking of giving SuSE 10.1 a go for a while, so decided to install it, intending to try this fix out once installed. However, the problem now doesn't appear with 10.1, so I suppose it's 'solved'.

Thanks very much for your help, anyway.
