startx fails after nvida driver instal. no screens

So i was gonna spend friday night seeing if suse 10.2 x86_64 could run some games.
i installed the nvidia binary driver from
init 3.

on reboot all i got was the command line. init 5 had been reached but nothing loaded.
startx delivered the error of "screen found but not configurable".
i used
nvidia-installer --uninstall
and after a reboot everything was back to normal.

Then....
reading Suse site they suggest using nvidia installation source to get the drivers.
having done this and downloaded and installed the drivers, i rebooted and got the same failure of startx.

i am running my video output through a KVM switch and then on to a hdtv res-1366x768
nothing has properly recognised my monitor settings so i am guessing that this may be the problem.
any suggestions?!?
some thread suggested editing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf and deleting any reference to resolutions other that basic 800x600. i did this with vi. but it didnt work.

So im sat here on my mac and am running update from the suse dvd. it has offered to delete the yast installed nvidia drivers.

i NEED 3D. what can i do.

specs.
AMD 86_64
nvidia mobo and chipset
nvidia fx5500 Graphics card
suse 10.2 open edition
1366x768 60Hz TV as monitor

- other than this i have found suse 10.2 absolutely great. a real vista killa just less command line please. -

I would suggest, from my own experience, with a KVM switch and wide screen to make sure you get the driver installed first only using the native screen, then reconnect the KVM. Until you have the driver installed properly and you see the Nvidia flash screen when X starts, you won't be able to generate the resolution that monitor needs.

I've never had luck doing anything but installing from Nvidia's source. Make sure you've got kernel-source installed first and all will go smoothly.

Second thing I've learned time and time again. Make sure you backup your xorg.conf before you mess with video drivers. That way you can revert it when you get screen errors. do that with:

>cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.backup

then if it crashes you can just rename xorg.conf to xorg.bad and then rename the backup back to xorg.conf.

ok thanks for the advice so far.

i do have the kernel-source installed.
i have done this before when the installer returns an error due to lack of source or c complier.

i have just tried it this morning with an old 15" monitor straight into the vga socket on the graphics card to see by-pass the KVM and the possible TV issues.
i get the same issues.
sax2 wont start.
it reports...

SaX: will start own server if needed
SPP: prepare device [0] profile: Depth24
SPP: prepare device [0] profile: NVidia
SPP: calling device [0] profile script: NVidia
SPP: including prepared profile(s)...

SaX: startup

xc: sorry could not start configuration server
xc: for details refer to the log file:

/var/log/SaX.log

xc: abort...

It is X that is having issues.
when going to init 5 and typing startx i get something like...
screen found but not configurable.
blah blah...
no screens available.

so to summarise i believe i have ruled out
1. correct suse 10.2 driver for nvidia
2. got all required kernel source, GCC, Make needed to run the installer
3. i am in init 3 as root when doing the install
4. tried in yast via the nvidia install source
5. tried different monitor hardware.

all attempts lead to startx giving the above "no screens" error.

any further suggestions.?!?

Is it a laptop?

Sounds to me like the Nvidia driver (xorg config) can't recognize the resolution of the tv. Is it working just with the regular monitor or laptop screen?

It's probably best to get it working just on the normal monitor first, then setup 'dual head' with the resolution for the tv on screen two. Then you can test various resolutions until you find the one that pops up correctly on the tv.

One other thing, am I understanding you correctly, that you installed Nvidia through yast? If so, I would uninstall it, then download the driver from Nvidia and compile it from terminal. It makes a difference, especially with special hardware.

no its a desktop.
nvidia driver has worked with suse 10.0 when i had xgl looking smart.

also worked with mandriva 2006 although that was the only thing i managed to get working. hence the travel back to suse. 10.2 is simply brill and its issues like this (above) that blight the swarms of people making the move.

yes i tried the command line version (see above) and it completes fine. saying use sax2 to configure your machine. its then when i see that sax2 doesnt start.
i even used yast in comand line mode to trigger sax2 and it just didnt work. returning straight back the yast command line interface.

i see from other LQ threads that people are talking about xfree86. http://http://www.linuxquestions.org...d.php?t=157680

could this be an issue? im in dark water now.
