startx error: no screens found

I have just installed debian onto my system, which has been a bit of a comedy of errors!

I am attempting to get x-windows running, but when I use the command startx it gives me an error saying no screens found, then fails.

how do I get around this? can I do something in XF86Config to fix it?

The more I learn, the less I know...

what is the error it is giving you? i was getting a bunch of those when i first installed it too. most of them were because i didn't select the correct settings for my monitor. you can change it in xf86config if you know your settings,..

The error messages for X can be found at /var/log/XFree86.0.log, you don't have to reboot to see those...

"No screens found" usually means that either you don't have a monitor/graphics card configured at all, or they are configured improperly.

Try using the command "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" as root to properly configure your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file, which is where your X config is stored. You'll need to know what driver your graphics card uses, the amount of RAM in kb that it has and the vertical and horizontal refresh rates for your monitor. The rest should be easy IIRC (I recently uninstalled Debian because of a screwed up dist-upgrade, have to reinstall it sometime)

I don't know how to find the correct drivers for your graphics card, to get the RAM just multiply the amount of RAM in MB by 1024, and to find the refresh rates just search google for your monitor's name and model.

Can you include your monitor and video card makes/models as well?

I'm going to have a go at reconfiguring my xserver before posting error messages as it doesn't seem to be picking up the radeon card properly.

card: ATI Radeon 7500 32mb DDR
monitor, don't know, it is an Asus Laptop however! 15" LCD, RedHat picks it as "unknown" I think, but it works ok..
