startx: no screens found

i recently installed RedHat 8 on an IBM ThinkPad i Series 2621. it has a 5.5 gig HD, 466 MHz Celeron, and 64 MB of RAM. i can login using either the root name (Anti for me) or "root" as the name. but when i type startx i get and error.

"Fatal server error: no screens found"

it goes on saying to send reports to the xfree86 site but when i try to access the config and log, it says Permission denied. it also says

"XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining."

another thing i think i should mention was that when i chose the monitor during the installation i chose "Generic 800x600". the choice linux chose automatically was "unprobed monitor" or something like that. is that where i screwed up?

ive tried editing the config but to no avial .

another problem im having is using the commands in the console. i found this site and have used it as a guide so far.

http://howtos.linux.com/guides/insta...ml/node1.shtml

im having trouble using the commands listed in that guide. for example, if you look at the 3.3.2 section it tells you to type

/home/larry# ls /etc

to look at your files in that directory. well i get "-bash: /home/Anti#: No such file or directory" if someone could refer me to a better guide, then that would be greatly appreciated. thx in advance

I suggest you use redhat9 or fedora instead, might solve your prob instantly. BTW, redhat's support on rh 8 ended a few hours ago

don't need to reformat, it will format during the install. Just start your install and follow the instructions.
