SBC DSL-modem vs Suse10.0

Howdy People!

I have a friend who i helped get a new PC.
They also have SBC DSL (strictlty a $ factor).

I dualbooted the system with Suse10.0. But Of course, SBC only includes a "Windows" DSL CD utility for their DSL-modem. So i have the Windows OS on the interent.
but I need the Suse10.0 to connect to the internet.

So, i have two choices:
1) go buy the cheapest router i can find (with PPPoE capbilities), and be done with it.
or,
2) somehow have the Suse 10.0 connect/communicate directly with the SBC DSL modem.

Is option #2 possible?
has anyone here ever done it (or even seen it done)?
If so, could you please share your insight?

Thanks as always!

Re: SBC DSL modem

Yes, it can be done since I also use SBC (now AT&T) DSL. During the install it will detect an unknown PPPoE device. Click on this to start the configuration, and once there click on Add to enter your modem information. Look towards the bottom on one screen where it says Device Activation. Change this to At Boot Time. After that all you really need to enter is your provider name e.g. SBC DSL or AT&T DSL, then enter the primary email address and password. Be sure to uncheck the password box, unless you like to be prompted all the time. I also went into the Network card settings, and clicked on Edit, then chose Next for all other queries to enable DHCP. That's all there is to it.

I would recommend the router also... Makes things easier to have an always up connection - plus allows multiple computers to get on. And also - SBC DSL is a pretty good choice. I have a 4Meg connection in my area...

Just read my reply and need to make one correction, but you may already have figured this out. Instead of entering your email address all you enter is your username and password.

hmmm

Yeppers!

thanks for the input jhorn.

glad to know that it 'can' be done.
i'll give it a shot this weekend.

of course, when you said "During the install it will detect an unknown PPPoE device.",
i assume you meant during the install of Suse10 ?

Its already loaded on my system... so i guess i have to try and add it through "YAST - Network Devices - DSL" ?

any thoughts?

Yes, if you already have Suse 10 installed, use Yast to configure your DSL modem from the Network Devices section.

SBC uses speedstream modems. Many already ARE routers. If they have a yellow sticker on the bottom with a code number then you can setup your system to a 192.168.1.x number and point your browser to the router and setup the modem as a router.

There is nothing to configure in Yast. The router is setup via a webpage. Your network card should be setup for DHCP. Once that is done you should be able to setup your router using Firefox and opening a webpage at 192.168.0.1. It might be 10.0.0.1 on that model.
