cannot access /etc files

After many months it looks as if there is a solution to CUPS printing problems. However, this involves accessing the /etc/cups/cupsd.conf file and I find that access to this - and other /etc/cups/cupsd files - is denied. There are crosses against them in the file system and they are also called 'unreadable'.

In 'Properties - permissions' I am told 'you are not the owner so you cannot change these permissions'. Well I am the owner, so what do I do about this?

My OS is OpenSuse 11.3

Is this just an access problem? Or should I reinstall these files, and if so how? Can anyone help please?

Many thanks JayBee21

So does this mean you are logged in as root?

I think the easiest way is to access those files from a terminal using sudo to elevate your privileges. For example, sudo vi /etc/cups/cupsd.conf should open the file in vi.

See http://linux.die.net/man/8/sudo for information on using sudo.

[looks like fordeck pulled the trigger quicker and with a good question. I guess I assumed that the OP was not running as root. Shame on me.]
