Does SUSE work with AVI files

I had a file .avi files and .mpeg files that is working fine in Windows.

When I tried to open them i SUSE, the .mpeg works fine with Kaffaine BUT the .avi files only produces the sounds without the image.

what did i miss?

libdvdcss probably isn't going to do a lot of good when playing avi files

I've never used kaffaine, so I'm not familiar with how to help with it.

Do you have mplayer installed? Mplayer will play just about anything you throw at it.

But did you understand why I mentioned it? If not: it was a hint how to find the instruction for using the packman yast source. They simply happen to have the codecs he was looking for.

You will also get problems with .wmv files, apparently due to some legal issues in Germany as to what can and what can't be included in the distribution.

I fixed all my problems by visiting http://xinehq.de/ and downloading the latest version of xine, together with all the required codecs. (In case you didn't know, Kaffeine is just one of many front ends for the xine media player.)

If you install the latest xine release, you will probably find that you have a couple of dependancies missing. You will be able to find them at http://rpm.pbone.net/

One word of warning, if you do this, Kaffeine and Xine will not be updatable through YOU in future.

mikemrh9: Why so complicated

Packman provides very recent packages for SuSE. Dependencies are also no problem if you use the Yast source as I suggested. And you will get easy updates (not automatic, however).

directory: suse/9.1

But don't forget to remove the SuSE version of xine before installing.

playback of AVI, is very simple with kaffine, go to packman.links2linux.org and download (w32codec-all-20040916-0.pm.0.i386.rpm) then just exe the .rpm, type in your root password and you should be finnished.

then open Kaffine press settings/ xine engine parameters/ then under codec win32_path type /usr/lib/win32 this should be the default and also the file where you installed the win 32 codecs, if not just redirect it to the folder where you installed the codecs.

and away you go
