Tried to use Slax 5.0.8 on my machine. Startup runs good for a while and then ends in a kernel panic reporting about "hdc - unknown partition table". What is hdc? Probably the CD-ROM drive. - Something seems deeply confused here! Do I have to give up on it?
Have you used any other past slax version before the 5.0.8 on the pc in question? Like 5.0.6 or 5.0.7b etc. Could just need a boot cheatcode to stop what is crashing and then again it might just not like your hardware. Thats why I asked about another slax version running this PC before the 5.0.8 panic'd out. If another slax like your pc then its not hardware.
On a side note. The hdc is the cdrom and hdd would be the2nd cdrom if present. All partitions on first HD are hda1-5-6-8 etc.The hdb1-5-6 etc would be the 2nd physical HD an partitions if present.
I have reason to believe that hdc is an LS-120 drive which exists on my machine, for which perhaps there is no support on the Slax CD. - No, this is my first attempt with Slax. Knoppix is running well, but then it is a few Megs larger!

Hello Linunix!
hdc is your secondary ide device, for example, hdc1 is your secondary master disk/cdrom and hdc2 your slave disk/cdrom.
Apparently you have some kind of problem with that device, try to disable it from your BIOS. Slax is a great distro. You can download Slax 5.6.0 from the official site.

Hi,
What is the output of;
Code:

My sample dmesg |grep hd ;

How is the device structured in BIOS?
By chance can you just disable the ls-120?
You are correct about no support for the LS-120 in Slax. They are planning to add the device in the next release;
Numbers don't mean master or slave, they mean partition numbers. For example, hda3 means my third partition in my primary master hard drive. If you have cdrom as hdc, hdc3 doesn't mean anything, because cds do not have lots of partitions like hard disks. Filesystem types of cdroms can be iso9660 (standard), udf, maybe some more, but only one type of them for cdrom. Music cds do not have partitions(file systems) at all, that's why you don't mount them.
