Yes that should work.
I haven't tried it with a new install, but to get a sata drive going in a new server I had to do this.
I build a new kernel with all the features required (including PCI Express).
Then I copied all the contents of CD1 to disk. Next I copied the newly build kernel to the
old_cd.i directory just below kernels. Also needed to:
copy .config from /usr/src/linux to the same dir as config (notice the removed dot .)
gzipped System.map and moved System.map.gz to the same dir.
Then wrote a new cd image, how to do this is described in the README.TXT in the kernels directory. The resulting image was written to CD and I could boot again.
In my case I needed a resque CD because I managed to screw up badly while copying a working kernel with all modules to the sata drive. I believe that this should also work for new installs. Maybe I try it but that's for another day.
