Well,
I finally did my best to screw up my Slack Partition. I hope that you guys will forgive the ignorance of my post and help this fellow Slacker.
Background:
I am not sure what happened, but after fighting through an upgrade gone bad, I managed to get my Slack box to boot again. ( running 9.1 Slack now)
I had the system back better than before, but now it doesn't run X anymore.
( All I did was reboot the system. Honest
Ok, I admit that I didn't read the warning about swaret needing lots of disk space. Slack 9.0 got trashed, then I decided to copy what I could salvage back to another larger partition. redid lilo,fstab and eventually did an install of 9.1 over the top of the new /. I did get the system up, but now it fails to startX.
I get the same message regardless of the user logged in the system.
