You signed up so that you can receive an SMS every time Linus uses the restroom.

Anyway, on topic : For running older hardware I would rather use an older slackware version than a recent one. eg: I have an old Pentium 133 that I want to use as a wireless bridge, running a 2.6 kernel plus all the most recent userspace tools is overkill not to mention heavy for such an old machine. Slackware 8.1 should do just fine

Yeah, that's one thing that puts Slackware ahead of most (or all?) other distros: support for older releases.

I think i586 should be the least common denominator. As others said, there are a LOT of Pentium-class machines still around. Plus, I think netbooks and embedded processors may not handle i686 optimizations.
