Hello, slackware(and linux in general) newbie here. Does everything you can use with slackware have to be i486, or can it be i386 or i586?

there are packages out there optimized for all kinds of architectures. There is an i686 optimized GNOME for slack, Dropline GNOME. Slack is fairly streamlined to begin with so it is still more responsive than say Mandrake (i586) and FC with it's optimized kernels.

i386, i486, i586 and i686 refer to your CPU. If you have a Pentium or newer, you can run i586, i486 and i386 code. If you have a Pentium II or newer (celeron, Athlon, etc) you can use i686 as well.
