Compared to what? On my main box the difference between Xfce and KDE is about 1% on a 16GB system. Xfce uses around 700+ MB at idle and KDE uses around 840MB. Running various benchmarking apps results in identical scores. Perceived "snappiness" can be changed by adjusting animation speed in KDE. Even at default, middling setting, KDE does not feel slower than Xfce. Set at "Instant" it's ridiculous fast.

I can easily disable services to get KDE under Xfce resource usage but what would be the point? I like the services and there is zero apparent difference in performance.

Were i using solid state disks i would probably conclude that too, alas my spinner begs to differ - XFCE still opens less files to desktop than KDE and the login manager (XDM in my case) saves some on top of that too.

And mind You, thanks to Seb, the XDM isn't a smidge boring as it used to be prior to the ricing.

Which reminds me we haven't posted riced XDM screenshots yet? or have we?

Glad you like it. I'm still using the same config here.

Here's the full config file. you can pull the bits you like from it.

It may be more about total RAM available since obviously I'm unconcerned about the 140MB extra noted above for a 16GB system. So I booted up an i5-3550 box with mechanical drives that has half that RAM - 8GB. However since that is a secondary streaming box there are fewer KDE services activated so while Xfce does still show slightly less files open, it uses ~680MB RAM at idle and KDE Plasma 5 uses ~690MB. Again there is no discernible difference in performance whether I use Xfce's own compositor or substitute KWin.

FTR I don't dislike Xfce. I used it as Main for almost 2 years when KDE v4 first came to Slackware since it was a pig back then. I still have a 32 bit 14.0 install on this newest Main box running Trinity and 2 other older distros running OG KDE 3.5 and there can be no doubt v3 was FAST. Trinity is still quite usable but it does lack some features 4 and 5 have and some of those are worth the cost.

The point of this response, though is as it began from me, "compared to what?"

Wonderful. I have pulled the bits I wanted. Thank you. I have a poor eye for aesthetic so I steal other people's work wherever I can.
The theme is a modified playstation-blue. wmclock and wmbiff are docked in the top left corner. A 3-desktop pager is in the top right corner. Minimized icons pile up on the bottom left side. There is a menu I barely use - most of what I need is accessible via shortcut keys else I dmenu it. No status or task bar. It is set up to open 4 xterm/windows (with a Nouveau IBM font that imitate the old VGA raster font) that I square with some tiling shortcuts. Note that I am slightly cheating here as I prefer black xterms over transparent urxvts.

For the story, I hated both Fvwm and Slackware in the 90's before doing a complete U-turn in the 2000's. For Slackware, it was due to my then boss propagandising me all day long with Slackware and *BSD, on how stable and lean they were, etc. And this is how I see Slackware indeed: a BSD system with a Linux kernel. I came to like Fvwm through this article. That's all.

Hey montagtdude, since you're already flying, have you got a source for any hi-res woodland shots?
I've got only a few shots like this below for example, from the net.
Only interested if it's woodland, no roads etc.
It'd help if they were released pub. domain or something, so I could use them in a project..

Hey elcore,

I don't think I have anything like that. Most of my shots have lakes, roads, and/or rivers in them. However, you can poke around the galleries at my website and feel free to download and use any pictures that suit your needs. I can provide high-res versions without a watermark too.
