He probably could have power and internet connection. Remeber the episode of Gilligan's Island where the trans-atlantic phone cable washed up on the island. But if you have an internet connection one could probably run some test pings to different IP's and figure out where one is generally located. Then email for help.

What I really need to know is which version of slack he is running and which kernel

While you are at it can you send the output of dmesg and lsmod?
