Making Monkey Island type game


Hello there. I've been planning on making a Monkey Island III type game for a little while now, and I thought I'd try and get some friendly advice. I need to learn a programming language (not too much of a problem - I have PHP, Javascript and Lingo [from Macromedia's Director] under my belt), but to date I have very little knowledge of coding for Linux.

I already have an idea about how to code the game, because I started it in Director back when I was still plodding along in Windoze. Also, I'm looking for a good engine to start with. (I tried writing my own one before.)

I know there's an open-source ScummVM out there, so that would be an obvious choice, but does anybody have any recommendations for [ good engines | useful languages [ good books for learning those languages ] ] ?

I know you're going to say "don't jump straight into trying to make a game as your first project in a new language", but I ask you to give me the benefit of the doubt.

Any advice, please?

If I recall correctly, "Monkey island" is a kind of an RPG, isn't it?
Anyway, maybe you want to have a look at pygame - combination of SDL library used in most games in linux and Python programming language which is the most modern language out there.

Alright, thanks - I'll have a look

Monkey Island is a point-and-click puzzle solving adventure game from LucasArts. The first two work very well in DosBox, but I'm looking for Monkey Island 3 style graphics (there's a load of screenshots HERE) - I don't fancy fiddling about with 3D stuff just yet, but this is about as close as you're going to get with 2D rendering.

Pygame looks good, having had a breif glance - thanks again!

(any more suggestions are welcome, though )
