Startup messages

There HAS to be some logs of system messages before you log on to your account. I've been getting some very strange messages recently but they fly by way too fast for me to read them. Where are they hidden, then ?

you might want to redirect the output (no offense if you allready know how to do this....)

and i think you have to be logged in as root

dmesg >> temp.txt or whatever file name will print out that startup message and redirect it into a text file in whatever directory you are in.
then you can read that file at your lesiure

The command "dmesg | less" will allow you to read the output of dmesg a page at a time.

A stupid yet related question : what's the difference between more and less ?

(Take this question out of a Linux context to seem really, really idiotic.)

less is better than more... more shows you pages of output page by page, less does the same, but lets you scroll back to previous pages.

most is a little faster than less and does a great job when used as the pager for man pages as it allows many more colors. But less works great so why try fixing what works?
