Sound problem

I have a problem that when by computer is left on something gets ahold of my sound and won't let anything access it. Nothing is playing through my speakers and I can't figure out what is doing it.

Is there something I can do that will tell me what is using my sound?

I am running kernel 2.6.9 and alsa 1.0.5. I don't think it is a kernel or alsa problem because I have been running those two versions since 2.6.9 was released and this is only a recent problem.

a cursed box

Maybe it's the module auto clean, that runs in a hourly basis.

check /etc/cron.daily/kmod

but I never had a problem like that.

Well I don't think it is that because I am not using any modules at all. Everything is built-in including alsa.

I am all out of ideas.
