Sound car is not working

Hello, dear friends,

Well, I am trying to install slackware 12.1 on 3 machines, and sound card does not work, players are working fine but no one can hear anything.
Have you ever been through this problem? If so, please, help me out.

Thank you very much in advance.

See this post. You may not need to edit /etc/modprobe.d/sound, but if you do, we will need to know the model of your card to advise which options to use. Please post the output of `lspci -vv` as root.

Okay. I'm assuming you un-muted everything in alsamixer. Did you un-mute sound in KDE or whatever you're using?

I followed what that post says and the sound card is still not working.
The system has showed this message on KDE all the time:
Code:
Sound server fatal error.
Error initializing the sound driver
device: default can't be opened for playback
(operation not permitted).
And the command "lspci -vv" says:

A really pedestrian question. You checked the obvious, that is, are your speaker wires plugged in properly?
Good luck, man!

Yeah, it is. And Yeah, the speakers are plugged properly, the sound card works fine on KUbuntu and Windowz.
I've been search the web, lots of people got the same problem.

Post the output of
Code:
# aplay -l
It *looks* like your sound card might use the snd-intel8x0 module, but I can't be sure until I see the ouput of `aplay -l`. Please list the output of `lsmod`. Try manually loading the snd-intel8x0 module by running the following command as root:
Code:
# /sbin/modprobe snd-intel8x0
Then test your sound (it's better to test the sound in a terminal outside of X to make sure there are no interfering applications preventing the sound card from being accessed). A nice command to test the sound card from the terminal is
Code:
$ aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
You can specify different options to the snd-intel8x0 module, but not the model option seen in other modules like snd-hda-intel. You would have to read /usr/src/linux-2.6.24.5/Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-Configuration.txt to find more information about those options.

MAKE SURE that your user is in the audio group. `cat /etc/group | grep audio` should return a line with your user at the end.

[edit]Since you said it is working in KUbuntu, you may wish to try the command `lsmod` there and post the ouput here as well so we can definitely determine which module should be loaded.[/edit]

This file says : Module snd-intel8x0
Code:
Module snd-intel8x0
  -------------------

    Module for AC'97 motherboards from Intel and compatibles.
            * Intel i810/810E, i815, i820, i830, i84x, MX440
                ICH5, ICH6, ICH7, ESB2
            * SiS 7012 (SiS 735)
            * NVidia NForce, NForce2, NForce3, MCP04, CK804
                 CK8, CK8S, MCP501
            * AMD AMD768, AMD8111
            * ALi m5455

    ac97_clock      - AC'97 codec clock base (0 = auto-detect)
    ac97_quirk    - AC'97 workaround for strange hardware
            See "AC97 Quirk Option" section below.
    buggy_irq - Enable workaround for buggy interrupts on some
                    motherboards (default yes on nForce chips,
            otherwise off)
    buggy_semaphore - Enable workaround for hardwares with buggy
            semaphores (e.g. on some ASUS laptops)
            (default off)
    spdif_aclink - Use S/PDIF over AC-link instead of direct connection
            from the controller chip
            (0 = off, 1 = on, -1 = default)

    This module supports one chip and autoprobe.

    Note: the latest driver supports auto-detection of chip clock.
    if you still encounter too fast playback, specify the clock
    explicitly via the module option "ac97_clock=41194".

    Joystick/MIDI ports are not supported by this driver. If your
    motherboard has these devices, use the ns558 or snd-mpu401
    modules, respectively.

    The power-management is supported.
So, what shall I do? How could I specify those options? Is it by editing the /etc/modprobe.d/sound file? Something like this?
Code:
options snd-hda-intel model=auto
If so, how'd I do that?

Yeah, it is.

That would be nice, but KUbuntu is not running on this machine any more. Would it work if I did that using a live CD?

Thank you very much for your efforts.

Hm. Looking through everything, it seems that the correct module is loaded. In addition, I don't think any of those options to the snd-intel8x0 module are going to change anything as drastic as no sound (for example, it looks like the ac97_quirk option just rearranges incorrect assignments of headphones etc. to volume levels). You should make sure EVERYTHING is turned up as high as it will go in alsamixer and run `alsactl store` after doing so. It should be noted that sometimes MM incorrectly means unmuted in alsamixer for some cards, so you should unmute everything (press m -- it should show 00), then run `alsactl store`, and then try playing something from the terminal (I emphasize the fact that you should try this OUTSIDE of X, in runlevel 3, before X is started). If there is no sound, try muting everything in alsamixer, then run `alsactl store`, and then try playing a sound. Beyond that, I don't think I can help due to my unfamiliarity of the card in question. You *may* wish to try playing around with module options in /etc/modprobe.d/sound, but I'm afraid I can't help much with the syntax. My guess would be something like this:
Code:
options snd-intel8x0 buggy_irq=0
where buggy_irq could be any of those options and 0 could be 0, 1 or -1.

I wish you good luck with this and hope that someone more knowledgeable of the card in question can help further (or that you figure it out promptly).

Well, I was just making sure I had unmuted everything in alsamixer but system started saying this now:
Code:
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device
So, what have I done?
Before that I could run alsaconf and everything went fine, alsamixer and alsactl store! Is there anything else I can do to get this problem fixed?

Thank you very much.

***EDIT:
I started getting this error while tryed to playback some mp3's using audacious:

Please try everything in the console in runlevel 3 before X is started. There are so many possible interferences in X that it makes it very difficult to properly diagnose the problem. Your recent errors suggest that your sound card isn't even being detected -- but without lspci or dmesg output from the SAME session, it is hard to tell whether it is solely X related (ie there is a permissions problem somewhere or an unclean profile, etc.) or if it is unrecognized system-wide. You may wish to try rebooting to see if it magically fixes itself, or you may try fiddling with udev rules in /etc/udev/rules.d (be careful here!) -- or see what alsaconf does, or see if /etc/modprobe.d/sound looks normal.

I did everything in runlevel 3 before rebooting this machine. X server was not started.

Now, audacious continues getting this message below, it works but with no sound, is this some error or just a message? I can't remember seeing this before!
Code:
amidi-plug(amidi-plug.c:amidiplug_init:97): init, read configuration
amidi-plug(i_backend.c:i_backend_load:107): loading backend '/usr/lib/audacious/Input/amidi-plug/ap-alsa.so'
amidi-plug(i_backend.c:i_backend_load:145): backend /usr/lib/audacious/Input/amidi-plug/ap-alsa.so (name 'alsa') successfully loaded
Thank you!
