sound problem on my acer aspire 5315 laptop

I have this brandnew laptop which is acer aspire 5315
and I installed a fresh SLACKWARE 12.1 on it.
After the installation, everything went smooth,
when I arrived at the KDE desktop screen I didn't hear the start-up sound
which I usually hear in my slackware desktop PC.
And I tried running a mp3 in amarok, it runs but no sound
at all. Weird eh?

I really don't know the reason why I can't hear
any sound coming from my laptop speaker.

Btw, before I installed slackware there was Windows
Vista in it and I heard its start-up sound so I don't
think the speaker is the problem in here.

I did a FULL install so I don't think I've missed
any necessary package.

And I don't receive any error messages like problem
in /dev/dsp or anything like that.
I have also adjusted my speaker's volume to the max
but still no sound.

Btw, my sound card is Realtek ALC268.

Pls help me about this weird matter.
This is the only problem I got w/ my fave
distro on laptop. I thank you in advance!

Slackware's sound is off by default.

Run these two commands:

You should add your user to the audio group (and the video, plugdev and cdrom groups for unrelated reasons) if you have not done so already using the following command:

# gpasswd -a username audio

Then run alsaconf as root, as /dev/me suggested. Select your sound card and follow the instructions. Then run alsamixer and turn up the volume for each slider. Also, make sure to unmute everything (press 'm' -- it should show 00 instead of MM at the bottom). Then press Esc twice to exit alsamixer and run `alsactl store` (as root). Then try playing a sound file. If it still doesn't work, you can try specifying different model options to the snd-hda-intel driver (which I think is the correct driver for your card -- but I could be wrong). In /usr/src/linux-2.6.24.5/Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-Configuration.txt, all of the possible model options are listed for your ALC268 card:

          acer          Acer laptops
          auto          auto-config reading BIOS (default)

You should edit /etc/modprobe.d/sound (create the file if it doesn't exist) and add/modify the following line:

options snd-hda-intel model=auto

You should remove the module using the following command (as root):

# rmmod snd-hda-intel

Then edit the /etc/modprobe.d/sound file (and save it), and then reload the module as follows:

# modprobe snd-hda-intel

Then try playing a sound file. Repeat for each model option. For more model options check the /usr/src/linux-2.6.24.5/Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-Configuration.txt -- but I think one of the listed ones should work.

Based on your laptop, I would *guess* that the following line in /etc/modprobe.d/sound should work (but try the other options if it doesn't):

I followed all your suggestions and it worked fine!
I think this line played the best game:

options snd-hda-intel model=acer

after the modprobe
my acer laptop blasted the SOUNDS!!

I think this should be considered by all acer users!

I have acer 5315 and i install suse 10.3 and fedoracore 8 & 9 bout my sound card not work.
please help me.
