Slackware on a dual PIII no way to get the SMP up
Hello there!!!
Hi, need some help here if you can.
Here is the deal, I installed Slack 9.1 on a dual PIII with 512 RAM and a aic7xxx controller, so far so good.
No as you know it doesn't come with and SMP kernel so I went to /usr/src/linux and compile it with the smp option. After the whole process I reboot the machine and not only it didn't saw the 2nd processor but the NIC and the sound card were gone.
I tried once again with a custom kernel set up, everything I had attached to the kernel no modules, and nothing so I make a modular kernel only and still nothing.
So I start wondering if there was a hardware issue, I swap the cpus and they seemed fine.
Last resource install other distros, Debian (no problem whatsowver after recompiling the kernel), redhat boot up with the smp, knoppix detected them at ones and so did DyneBolic. Even Wi@#%$ saw both cpus no problem.
Any ideas, running out of them and I am a Slack user I don't want to change!!!!
Try copying the kernel from Debian or RH or Knoppix and using it in Slack. And just to keep the headers consistent, tar up the usr/src/linux directory and copy that, too.
1. Did you change your linux/Makefile so that "MAKE=make -j3" before you compiled?
2. Did you say yes to "Enhanced Realtime Clock Support"?
3. Did you do a "make dep"?
4. Did you do a "make bzImage"?
5. Did you do a "make modules"?
6. Did you do a "make modules_install"?
7. Did you copy the bzImage to the right location?
8. Did you run lilo?
Hi. I have Slack 9.1 on a dual Athlon. It took me a while before I finally got the kernel to see both cpu's. What finally helped me was the "SPM-HOWTO". It should be in your /usr/doc/HOWTO/ folder, if you installed that package. If not, look at http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/SMP-HOWTO
This document was what finally got me running on both CPUs.

Thanks Eric, but yes I did all that stuff.
I've been a linux user for quite some time and the kernel recompile has been there since day one.
I ran into almost everything in this matter but this just beats me.
Zoinksbob, I really apreciate the post I'll let you know how it goes since the kernel that I copied over didn't work with some of the harware even I copied over the modules and all.
