I remember this didn't work out of the box in previous Slackware releases due to timing issues in the kernel/initrd (basically, the kernel would try to mount the root filesystem before it had finished scanning USB storage devices).

Now that Slackware is running a considerably more modern kernel however, perhaps that situation may have changed? I don't know off hand, but I should think somebody has tried recently and could report their results.

You need to use the rootdelay option to pass to the kernel, which will delay mounting the root system allowing the USB drivers to be loaded in time. However, never having done this myself, I can't help beyond that. A search of the forums for rootdelay may yield some related threads.
