I replaced a Samsung Model TS-H552U DVD IDE burner with an Asus DRW-2014LT1 SATA burner, and can no longer burn CDs or DVDs. The drive reads media fine, but will not write to anything, either with cdrecord or cdrdao from CLI or K3B to either CDs or DVDs.
The command I used previously with cdrecord to erase a CD-RW was:
Code:
cdrecord -v dev=/dev/hda blank=fast
By changing the device from /dev/hda to /dev/sr0 it blanked CD-RW media without any problems or errors.
was previously used to burn an ISO image to CD/CD-RW. Now it outputs:
Code:
root@silas:/home/mingdao# cdrecord -v driveropts=burnfree dev=/dev/sr0 slackware-current-install1.iso
cdrecord: No write mode specified.
cdrecord: Asuming -sao mode.
cdrecord: If your drive does not accept -sao, try -tao.
cdrecord: Future versions of cdrecord may have different drive dependent defaults.

What gives?
I'm running Slackware -current as of Mar 26. Tried with the Slackware-2.6.24.3 kernel, and my own custom kernel. My kernel has no ATA support, only SATA ... since I have a SATA hard drive as well as this SATA DVD writer.
Similar results using growisofs or K3B for burning DVDs.
Has anyone learned how to write to SATA DVD burners?

Some bios chipsets do not support SATA optical drives. If you have SATA hard discs that are reported as SATA so should the optical drive. If the optical drive is reported as IDE, check with your vendor for an upgrade.
And here's some burning tests, which were sent to the Cdrecord-support mailing list,
in response to Joerg Schilling, who wrote:

Your problem is not a problem caused by media but either by defective drive firmware or by a defective Linux kernel driver.

BTW: you are using low quality media, did you try better media?

This is obviously a problem with the medium...
(NB: he can't seem to make up his mind)
These are two burns to the same CD-RW. The first one is with the SATA burner, the second with the PATA burner. Clearly showing that the media is good, and not the problem.

Okay, here's evidence that "the medium" is not at fault:

This test should prove that the media is NOT at fault.
Bruce, it is just a very outside thought but you don't have a renegade entry in /etc/default/cdrecord? I realise that the command line would override anything there but it would be something to eliminate.
BTW I have read some of the cdrecord mailing list, some of Jorg Schilling's web site and some of his newsgroup postings. Great software but a very quirky individual for sure :-)
