SATA DVD+/-RW drive will not write CD/DVDs

I replaced a Samsung Model TS-H552U DVD IDE burner with an Asus DRW-2014LT1 SATA burner, and can no longer burn CDs or DVDs. The drive reads media fine, but will not write to anything, either with cdrecord or cdrdao from CLI or K3B to either CDs or DVDs.

The command I used previously with cdrecord to erase a CD-RW was:
Code:
cdrecord -v dev=/dev/hda blank=fast
By changing the device from /dev/hda to /dev/sr0 it blanked CD-RW media without any problems or errors.

This command:
Code:
cdrecord -v driveropts=burnfree dev=/dev/hda /path/to/file.iso
was previously used to burn an ISO image to CD/CD-RW. Now it outputs:
Code:
root@silas:/home/mingdao# cdrecord -v driveropts=burnfree dev=/dev/sr0 slackware-current-install1.iso
cdrecord: No write mode specified.
cdrecord: Asuming -sao mode.
cdrecord: If your drive does not accept -sao, try -tao.
cdrecord: Future versions of cdrecord may have different drive dependent defaults.

What gives?

I'm running Slackware -current as of Mar 26. Tried with the Slackware-2.6.24.3 kernel, and my own custom kernel. My kernel has no ATA support, only SATA ... since I have a SATA hard drive as well as this SATA DVD writer.

Similar results using growisofs or K3B for burning DVDs.

Has anyone learned how to write to SATA DVD burners?

Just a few command's outputs, just to try understanding what's the matter with the device.

Code:
lsmod
cdrecord -scanbus
ls -l /usr/bin/cdrecord
dmesg | grep sd*
dmesg | grep sr*
Ciao

This problem exists with 2 kernels. However, because of length, only data from one is posted -- and that must be in two posts.

I notice this difference on 3 of our other Slackware systems:
Code:
mingdao@james:~$ ls -l /usr/bin/cdrecord
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 361988 2008-02-28 14:01 /usr/bin/cdrecord

anna@peter:~$ ls -l /usr/bin/cdrecord
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 361668 2007-11-29 15:05 /usr/bin/cdrecord

mingdao@titus:~$ ls -l /usr/bin/cdrecord
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 361668 2007-11-29 15:05 /usr/bin/cdrecord
Though on the system in question, cdrecord does burn successfully with the IDE DVD burner.

Edit: K3B setup changed these perms ...

Update: I've installed cdrtools-2.01.01a38-i486-1.tgz and dvd+rw-tools-7.1-i486-1.tgz from -current.

No change for the SATA drive ...

Some bios chipsets do not support SATA optical drives. If you have SATA hard discs that are reported as SATA so should the optical drive. If the optical drive is reported as IDE, check with your vendor for an upgrade.

There's a lot of info out there on this subject. One or 2 might be relivant to your situation.

The SATA optical drive is not reported as IDE.

Here's the output of dmesg as it reads the IDE and SATA controllers:

Could you also post the output of '/sbin/lspci -vv'.

Bump ... I've posted output two people requested, but they didn't respond. Just curious why you asked for it and made no comments.

Though on the system in question, cdrecord does burn successfully with the IDE DVD burner.

Edit: K3B setup changed these perms ...
Did you also change the perms on the device?

No, sir:
Code:
mingdao@silas:~$ ls -l /dev/sr0
brw-rw---- 1 root cdrom 11, 0 2008-04-19 15:15 /dev/sr0
mingdao@silas:~$ ls -l /dev/sr1
brw-rw---- 1 root cdrom 11, 1 2008-04-19 15:15 /dev/sr1
You can see that sr0 is the SATA DVD burner, sr1 the PATA DVD burner:
Code:

And here's some burning tests, which were sent to the Cdrecord-support mailing list,
in response to Joerg Schilling, who wrote:

This is obviously a problem with the medium...
(NB: he can't seem to make up his mind)
These are two burns to the same CD-RW. The first one is with the SATA burner, the second with the PATA burner. Clearly showing that the media is good, and not the problem.

Okay, here's evidence that "the medium" is not at fault:

First, burning to a Memorex CD-RW in the SATA Asus DRW-2014L1T:

Bruce, it is just a very outside thought but you don't have a renegade entry in /etc/default/cdrecord? I realise that the command line would override anything there but it would be something to eliminate.

BTW I have read some of the cdrecord mailing list, some of Jorg Schilling's web site and some of his newsgroup postings. Great software but a very quirky individual for sure :-)

All the best,

Andrew

Andrew,

Thanks for your reply!

Should I edit the file?

Jorge has only one way of seeing things ... his way. Which is why he no longer
works with the Linux kernel. He could not see things Linus' way.
