Hi Bruce,

That is an amazingly detailed file! I had to build mine from scratch as a default Slackware 12 installation did not even write the file.

My only thought, if you are having trouble with burning, is that it would be an idea to 'cut the Gordian knot' and eliminate this file completely (perhaps by renaming to etc/default/cdrecord_bak) and work fully on the command line until you find the winnng formula. Then rewrite the config file to suit this formula.

My own file is very simple but works beautifully on my system:

NB: I added time to see if DMA was enabled, as sdparm does not say, nor does hdparm for this device.

Another coaster, new errors, and 'back to the drawing board'.

Perhaps Schilling is right and the error is in the kernel driver.
If so, how would I know so I could send Jeff Garzik a bug report?

There are two things I see that I question, but many Google hits haven't answered:

Sorry Bruce I have no idea of the problem. I am thankful that burning with cdrecord has always been hassle-free for me on my current hardware.

I noticed that in the file I had the model name, rather than the
vendor name. Changing that didn't help, either.

I also noticed I have /etc/default/cdrecord.new, which I had not
put into place whenever it was updated (usually I install fresh).

I have a suspicion that if the CDR_DEVICE= line does not actually containing a scsi address it can be simply an arbitrary label that links to a specific device in the configuration file.

The man page seems to be saying this in this section:

This may either hold a device identifier that is suitable

I have always meant to try and see if that means the following is valid syntax, or I need a name recognised by cdrecord:

[solved]

The problem was with the VIA chipset board.

I upgraded to an Asus M2N-E, with Nvidia Nforce
chipset. Now it uses sata_nv, and it burns okay.
