Radeon 9000 and Slackware 9

Hi

I am clueless as to how to configure my system to use my card properly with DRI.

I have enabled the dri module and glx module, and I am on the radeon driver. But when I run glxinfo it says the following:

Code:
name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0

server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.2
server glx extensions:

client glx vendor string: SGI

It says that direct rendering is off.
What am I missing? I have read through the forums but I am still uncertain.

This is a brand new stock install of Slackware with its own default kernel off the CD. DO I need to recompile it or something?

Can someone explain to me clearly the exact steps I need to take to get DRI working?

Thanks a lot - this is a great distro - i love the features and stuff, really nice. Any help with fixing DRI would be VERY much appreciated!

make sure that you have the kernel modules 'agpgart' and the module for the radeon (prob'ly fglrx) loaded.

http://www.xfree86.org/~alanh/linux-...lsource.tar.gz

Unpack it , cd into the dir. and compile it with
#make -f Makefile.linux
A file, radeon.o will be created in the dir.,
cp it to /lib/modules/2.4.20/kernel/drivers/char/drm/ [...you may want to mv the existing one to old-radeon.o to back it up first].

Restart X, ...if your system is already set to load the agpgart and radeon modules at boot, you should be all set.

IIRC, slackware 9 is using X 4.3 right?
The patches to support radeon 9000's hasn't been merged into the X tree yet (and unless Mike went out and got it, support probably isn't in slack yet either).

If the above post doesn't help you out, you'll also need to find radeon 9000 patches that you can apply to X. I don't know exactly where the patches are, but there were some discussions about X recently on /. and these drivers were brought up. Look for articles about X forking

well that's one success story... can anyone help out with modding the agpgart module to work with the agp port of a via p4pb ultra mainboard?

P.S. specifically I'm trying to get an ati 9700 pro at 8x to run with this mobo... but agpgart can't detect the aperture size. So I hardcoded the aperture size, configured x (4.2) with ati's fglxconfig and set agpmode to 4x and then ran XFree86... only to have my monitor go blank and the powerbutton on the monitor flash on and off... any ideas???
