I am not a longtime Linux user but I have been messing with it for a little bit trying different distros and learning as much as I can. I listened to Chess Griffin's Linux Reality Podcast quite bit and was impressed by his love of Slackware and it frankly got me curious. I have decided to go ahead and stop distro jumping and pick one really get to learn it and I chose Slackware. I am really impressed with all the helpful people on this forum, the knowledge is staggering and also the friendliness surprised me. I recall recently reading a post by someone who was frustrated and had thought of giving up on Slackware and it really was fantastic to see all of the people replying to him offering encouragement, that was something I haven't witnessed on other distro forums. So anyway I have installed Slackware 13 last night, just the first 2 disks as I wanted an XFCE only desktop. I am looking forward to configuring everything and getting it all working and most importantly learning. So anyway thank you all for all the excellent info I have come across on this forum, thank you to Chess Griffin for the inspiration, and thanks to Patrick V and the Slackware Team for a great distro. Once I get my Laptop fully working I am going to subscribe to the DVDs at the Slackware Store to show my thanks.
Hi Mike and welcome to Slackware.
I also listen to Chess' podcasts. He wrote sbopkg which is a very useful Slackbuild tool.
Thanks, I am looking forward to trying sbopkg out. Basically I think my first steps are to get my wireless working, setup a firewall, update my install through slackpkg, and then go find out what apps I may want via the slackbuilds.org via sbopkg. At least I think thats what I need to do. Anyway that is my plan for late tonight or early tomorrow as my two kids keep my computer time limited during the day.
Welcome and in my biased opinion you couldn't have chosen a better distro to hang with.
There are a few area's that require effort here in Slack based on my use.
1.] Learning to use the tools to set your system up just the way you want it, which isn't all that difficult.
2.] Trying to recall how to use all of those tools in the future as I myself seldom have to use them after I'm up and running.
3.] Remembering you can omit number 2 because everything you need to know is in print.:-)

Welcome Mike. sbopkg is a neat way of keeping track of your packages and resolving dependencies automatically, but only for packages available in slackbuilds. You may also wanna learn about src2pkg. It's quite helpful sometimes. I also found some useful packages through slackfind.net.
Note*
Slackbuild.org will not provide you with packages directly, you must compile them using the Slackbuilds provided. [by running as root ./<pkgname>.Slackbuild]
Thank you to everyone for all the helpful links. I am really loving Slackware 13 right now, wireless is working right out of the box with WICD which is something that I haven't been able to say for some of the "easy distros" out there. Anyway I think I have found the distro for me and that is really cool.
