Not only its own copy of ffmpeg, but a rage fork which does not have nearly as many developers looking at it. At least MPlayer uses the upstream ffmpeg source when you choose to build it with a static ffmpeg.

Additionally mpv recently broke the ffmpeg API compatibility again...

Yes. I'm fine with this both technically (I have a fast enough build system) and politically.
