mouse side button problems...

I can't get my back/forward side mouse buttons to work in Slackware 12 with my Logitech Cordless Click Mouse. I've read info from several sites, including the readme on Gentoo Linux, with no success. I don't want to install imwheel or beatnix if I don't have to. Here's my xorg.conf:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "ButtonMapping" "1 2 3 6 7 8 9"
EndSection

When I brought up xev, my side mouse buttons didn't register. Would it matter then to run xmodmap -e pointer 1 2 3 6 7 8 9 if my buttons aren't registering with X? I also tried this:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "mouse1"
Driver "evdev"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/event3" # (cat proc/bus/input/devices)
EndSection

with no results (after rebooting the X server). My /var/log/Xorg.0.log looks fine. Strangely in my opensuse 10.3 installation, xev sees all of the buttons. Here's my opensuse config:

Section "InputDevice"
Driver "evdev"
Identifier "Mouse[1]"
Option "Buttons" "12"
Option "InputFashion" "Mouse"
Option "Name" "ImExPS/2 Logitech MX Mouse"
Option "Protocol" "event"
Option "SendCoreEvents" "on"
Option "Vendor" "Sysp"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

I think opensuse has a newer kernel version. Is that what is making the difference? Can anyone help me out?

Hey vik,

Don't know if this can help, but here's my setup.

xorg.conf:

Code:
Section "InputDevice"
  Driver "mouse"
  Identifier "Mouse0"
  Option "Buttons" "9"
  Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
  Option "InputFashion" "Mouse"
  Option "Name" "Logitech;MX310"
  Option "Protocol" "explorerps/2"
  Option "Vendor" "Sysp"
  Option "ZAxisMapping" "6 7"
EndSection
Contents of .Xmodmap file in my home folder:

Code:
pointer = 1 2 3 8 9 4 5 6 7 10 11 12 13
In rc.modules I've done this to the Mouse support section:

Code:
/sbin/modprobe psmouse proto=any
Apparently I run the risk of breaking my mouse if I'm using KVM and switch consoles, but since that's not an issue for me, I don't really care.

This setup works a charm for me.

Regards,
Thomas

Thanks for the tips. I don't have a KVM setup either. I'll try it out as soon as I get home.

Thanks, adding that line to rc.modules fixed it. I wish they would've put that in the Gentoo FAQ.
