Question Kernel Update Results in Error 0x07 at Boot

Not seen this before. Updated the kernel, reboot and am greeted by

Code:
Loading Linux
Error 0x07
boot: Linux
No idea. I assume the boot sector is screwed up somehow, but I'm not finding any details anywhere to point to a solution.

Probably not related but just to be sure... what process did you follow to update your kernel?

Beginning to look like a bad NVME drive. Was able to boot with install CD and mount it just before I started this thread, now I can't. Ran a fsck on it and that helped, but yeah, no trust in it now.

Fortunately, it's just a system drive, but not what I wanted right now.

From the changelog:

Code:
Sat Feb 18 02:04:34 UTC 2023
patches/packages/kernel-firmware-20230214_a253a37-noarch-1.txz: Upgraded.
patches/packages/linux-5.15.94/*: Upgraded.
These updates fix various bugs and security issues.
Be sure to upgrade your initrd after upgrading the kernel packages.
If you use lilo to boot your machine, be sure lilo.conf points to the correct
kernel and initrd and run lilo as root to update the bootloader.
If you use elilo to boot your machine, you should run eliloconfig to copy the
kernel and initrd to the EFI System Partition.
Did you read and follow the advices about your boot loader?

If the NVME drive is failing you should probably be able to see some messages about that in the output from "dmesg".

regards Henrik

The README file of LiLo says about 0x07:

“Invalid initialization”. The BIOS failed to properly initialize the disk controller. You should control the BIOS setup parameters. A warm boot might help too.

That's all I know. Sorry I can't help more, having switched to GRUB since years.

Thanks all. Just got a new drive in and reinstalled the system.

It was using lilo, now using elilo.

The old NVME was... well... old, and not exactly right for the job it was doing. Was on my todo list to replace.

Yeah, had a nvme die on me at work last year on a win10 laptop, no warning no updates previously done... it just kicked the bucket.
