Well, I installed a new splash screen last night and it worked pretty well.

I grabbed the tar.gz, left it in my home directory and opened up the Themes / Appearances utility. I navigated to my home directory and selected the tar.gz file and *boom*, it came up and has been working great.

2.6.7 kernel
KDE 3.2
XOrg 6.7

I dunno if that helps at all, but it worked for me ...

well that's the way i used to do it...but i got a new harddrive recently and reinstalled slack 10 and this has been happening since. and clawhead, it sounds like you had this problem with just that specific splash screen... the 3 splash screens that i've tried have all done the same thing (and all of them have had a Theme.rc to go with them)... i can install them, i can see them in the splash screen utility in control center (and try them out by pressing 'test'), but they just won't come up when i restart kde. it seems to try for a second or two, and then the default comes up. i even tried installing the splash screen into /opt/kde/share/apps/ksplash/Themes/, made sure my normal user had full permissions to it, but the same thing happens...i can see it and enable it in the splash screen utility in control center, but it still will not come up =( i have no idea what the problem could be...damn default splash screen could not clash any more with the style and colors of the rest of my environment...its more of an irritation than a big problem, but customizing linux is half the fun of using linux, and the default splash screen is a big eye sore against the background of the rest of my desktop. i appreciate all the replies. anyone have any other suggestions?

Solved it don't know how

I solved it,
i downloaded another splash screen which worked and replaced the png files. and it worked Ok.
the diference with this splash screen(the one that worked) and the other (the one that didn't) is a file named '.Ds_store'
don't know what it means because the file looks like a binnary file.
I hope i helped some way.
