HP deskjet 3550 wont go

just got an HP deskjet 3550 and i can't get it to work
i have installed the HP Deskjet 3550 Foomatic/hpijs driver

i am using CUPS

the KDE printing manager shows my hp but the little icon shows a printer with a red circle with a white exclamation mark in it. i cant find documentation that tells me what this means

i think it means stopped, as printing manager shows state as "stopped (accepting jobs)"

when i try to print nothing happens.

then i right-click and "start printer" the little exclamation icon goes away but when i try to print still nothing happens and soon its state reverts to stopped

i am running slackware with kernel 2.6.4 (it didnt work with kernel 2.6.3 or 2.6.1 either)

also when a job is pending and i "start printer" in KDE print manager the exclamation icon gets replaced by a lightning icon which i suppose stands for power

maybe the printer isnt able to draw any power from the usb port??
how would i check that?

have just realised that error only happens when trying to print test page through kde print manager! i can successfully print normal files through kedit etc..

problem solved!!!!

to solve it i removed cups and ESPghostscript then compiled the latest from source
i installed hpijs which i was missing. i am pretty sure that was the problem all along

oh well hope someone else might find my stupid problem useful
