I have a similar problem with GE on slackware13 64 with multilib. I did my package using slackbuild. When I try to run GE it crashes at splashscreen and here is the crashlog.

BrianL: try to record GE window, while You're waving outside, and see, if You've been recorded You cannot see yourself, while You behind computer (I suppose, that You haven't split personality ). Or You can put your laptop outside and see, if You can see yourself typing on the laptop in GE
