i've this in /etc/group : cdrom::19:egag

and if you're going to get a 2.6 kernel, remember that your cd-burner will be /dev/hdd again,
and you don't need ide-scsi.
( cange the fstab in that case )

and for usb...type " tail -f /var/log/messages " in a console ( as root ) and look at the output
when you unplug and plug that usb connector.

To make it clear: With kernel 2.6 you do not only not need ide-scsi, you *must not* have it!

Egag, would you mind clarifying a few things for me? I've got append="hdd=ide-scsi" in lilo.conf. I've created /dev/dvdrom for my dvd burner. As far as I know the ls -l command tells me which group the device belongs to. So for example ls -l /dev/sr0 gives:

brw-rw---- 1 root cdrom 11, 0 1999-04-13 04:24 /dev/sr0

I'm not sure what the sr0 part stands for. Anyway I still cant play cd's in my cdrom. ls -l /dev/cdrom gives:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 2005-08-02 15:26 /dev/cdrom -> /dev/hdc

So does that mean it belongs to the group 'root' which I need to add myself to? So far I've added 'simon' to group cdrom.

As a note, the symlink permissions don't matter, only
the permissions of file the symlink points to do
(in this case /dev/hdc)

So ls -l /dev/hdc:

brw-rw---- 1 root disk 22, 0 2002-06-09 19:27 /dev/hdc

The group is disk?

You could chown root:cdrom /dev/hdc if you want

Hello, back again. After reinstalling slackware I'm setting it up again. I decided to run xine-check to see what it says. It tells me dev/cdrom and dev/dvd (my dvdrom and burner) both point to dev/hdc. Is that right? My dvd burner is hdd. Anyway it didn't say there were any faults.

Sorry, but another problem. I can't run k3b setup. I've added append="hdd=ide-scsi" to lilo.conf. I've created mnt/dvdrom, which mounts fine. But I can't acces k3b setup. I enter root password and that's it. Nothing. I'm also getting a warning about fstab.

[mntent] warning: no final newline at the end of /etc/fstab.

I edited it using emacs.

Edit: I uninstalled k3b-current and it's working fine with the older version. Thanks.

how about mounting with UDF filesystem instead of ISO9660

mount -t udf /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
