Hi & thanks for reading. I recently upgraded to Slack 11. I've noticed my DNS resolution seems slow via my cable modem setup using DHCP. I followed the DHCP mini HOWTO to set it up. Here are some pertinent details:
-----
1) rc.inet1.conf snippet:
# Config information for eth0:
IPADDR[0]=""
NETMASK[0]=""
USE_DHCP[0]="yes"
DHCP_HOSTNAME[0]=""
MTU[0]="1500" # The default MTU is 1500, but you might need
DHCP_KEEPRESOLV[0]="no" # If you dont want /etc/resolv.conf overwritten
2) resolv.conf <<< created using netconfig
# Generated by dhcpcd for interface eth0
search ahvl.nc.charter.com
nameserver 24.197.97.134
nameserver 24.197.97.135
3) Charter speed test:
Preparing Speedtest . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Done
running 10s outbound test (upload) . . . . . 287.74Kb/s
running 10s inbound test (download) . . . . . . 2.84Mb/s
Your speed is 51.69 times faster than 56Kb dialup
Your Workstation is connected to a Cable/DSL modem
click START to re-test

So the speed looks good but it seems to take a while to resolve names via NDS! Any ideas where to look or other useful information I could provice? Perhaps a few neighbors now have cable modems too!
Unfortunatley Im not that savy when it comes to networks, but Im having a problem similiar to yours in that internet browsing is slow in the sense that when I type in a URL it takes a while to find the page or load it up, but once it does its fine, does that sound familiar to your problem?
I've noticed this to be a problem when the first nameserver entry is offline or unreachable. If the first one doesn't respond, it often takes a little while before the secondary server is queried. Try pinging both of the DNS servers and make sure they both reply. If the first one doesn't, comment it out and try again. If they both reply, try reversing the order they're listed in to see if it makes a difference.
I run two DNS servers on my home network, and the behavior you described is exactly what happens on my Linux boxes if I ever have to take the primary DNS server down for anything.
Interesting...I pinged both and received very similar times. I commented out the first line and there is a noticeable difference in the browser response time now. Thanks!
