slow bootup when loading networking, possibly dhcp problem?

Hello all,
Strange problem, I think. When I boot my box, at the point where the network is activated, the box just sits for a couple of minutes while the i.p. is resolved. If I omit this stage, then boot up is as fast as I need it to be. If I then run ifup eth0, the amount of time to get an i.p. is in the region of two minutes, as during boot up.
My ISP tells me that I need dhcp for my i.p., but then when I check, I always have the same i.p. of 10.0.0.13. Once everything is up and running, my internet access is fine. If I then try to be clever (at least I thought so), and manually set my eth0 i.p. to 10.0.0.13, and run the ifup eth0 command, then the network comes up almost instantly, but I get no internet access. I can still ping my dsl router on 10.0.0.2, which is where it always sits, but no internet addresses. If I run the router config by browsing to http://10.0.0.2, then the diagnostics routine pings my isp ok, but still no other internet access. Is this some very clever peice of ip blocking by my isp, or am I overlooking something obvious?

Thnx in advance

You should see if you have configured both your router and the Internet connection in linux to get the IP by DHCP and try i again.

Does it take long if you try to renew your IP?

If it doesn't work try setting both to a static IP address and it should boot very quickly

I had a sort like problem where the DHCP didn't work and it took ages just to boot my PC.
It turned out that the version of my Ethernet card was not supported but that can't be your problem because everything works once it has finally booted

Fixed it. It turns out that my ISP had some problems with their DHCP server and my router and NAT settings. Anyway, changed from NAT to NAPT as per my ISPs info, and voila, now get my ip address within 3-4 seconds.
