HPLIP upgrades can be a bit cranky if your HP printer needs a plugin (as my HP Laserjet M1212NF MFP does). For some odd reason lately, or just on current, it forgets to download/update the plugin, or can't find the plugin, etc... try 'hp-plugin' as root CLI. Yo may need to download teh plugin first and then tell hp-plugin to ise that file.

Luckily I found some spare time today to reinstall the new hplip. Same problem, deleting the printer and adding it anew didn't change it first. In the end I had to try different printer drivers that the CUPS frontend was offering (one hpijs, but foomatic gave an error, and two hpcups filters). The third one solved the problem for now for me, without downloading any additional plugins or similar.
Dunno why a filter that has worked for at least 5 years now (longer in fact, but on Slackware 14.2 and before that on 14.1) stopped working out of a sudden.
P.S.: The driver that worked for me was marked "(en, en)" in the list, while the in my case dysfunctional hpcups entry was marked with a single "(en)".
