apps exec when x starts

From searches and my linux books they say to edit $HOME/.xinitrc to get certain apps to run when I use startx, but I can't get any of them to work. For example, gaim.

I've tried adding exec gaim, gaim &, and gaim to it, but it still doesn't work. Any ideas?

I read that already before posting and didn't understand the difference between editing the .xinitrc and editing $HOME/.xinitrc, which the second he got to work.

hrmm they are both the exact same files....he just typed it differently when he reposted...his point of reposting was showing what he did in the "code" rather than what file he is editing...even though its the same file....
so in your /home/user folder ( p.s. you are the user )
edit the .xinitrc file and type the commands like so:
command1 &
command2 &
exec yourWM
thats a basic structure and you could have it something like this:
gkrellm &
licq &
exec blackbox
just for example....

I had tried entering them in after my wm. I had no idea it mattered what order they had to be in to work. Thank you.
