i just did driver because the other ones are already installed
do i have to recompile all of them?>

Yeap, so the utils and lib can match the functionality of latest drivers.

I had same problems:

I downloaded latest version alsa + utils, tools, alsaconf etc

compiled kernel (2.6.12) with no alsa support as per alsa instructions
installed all asla packages
got no sound cards found at all, so
recompiled kernel with alsa support and soundcards ticked
rebooted and it works fine now

I have a weird bug with acpi that disables irq 10 which my sound card is using so I have to add apci=off to get my sound card to work with alsa

okay after recompiling all the packages together alsa is now working.. thanksn guys
now i have a new problem with kde sounds... i'll post a new topic
