2nd monitor blanks, resets constantly, with/without compositing 9600 GT

I've got a second monitor (obviously) that shares my 9600GT with my primary, both using DVI. I've never had a problem with it before, but a few days ago I turned it off for some gaming (monitors are different sizes). Haven't bothered to turn it back on until today when I wanted to do some coding. I did it in openbox with /usr/bin/nvidia-settings, and the monitor turned on, seemed to work for a few seconds, then died, then turned on for a few more seconds, etc. Does the same thing in xfce (with compositing) at about the same frequency of occurrence. I doubt it's a bad cable, and it's quite unlikely that it's a power issue as the monitor stays on- the display just blanks. I haven't tested it with svga since my card is DVI only and I can't find an adapter. I've googled it and none of the solutions or problems seemed relevant, Ideas?

Hm.... okay then... just turned my computer off (it's been on for a few weeks, GPU was about 70C) to let everything cool down. Started up xfce, tried to enable the second monitor, and it hasn't started resetting yet. Problem solved?

Yeah, and probably decrease the temperature that the fan starts spinning up in order to prevent it in the first place. The computer had been idle for hours before this happened. Well, it's been up for an hour. Guess this issue is solved. *headdesk*
