I never cared much for the "basic editing"-like "photo management" apps.
They are not good enough for real editing, not good enough for real management of tens of thousands of pictures (like I have), etc.

So I copy my pictures manually from my camera (mount it as a simple external volume), edit them with the Gimp and use programs like ImageMagick, Image-ExifTool, etc. to convert, change tags, etc.
And finally, some home-written PHP pages with a MySQL database for quick searching and displaying from any place that can access my server.

Anyone knows how to get Rodent icon package for XFCE? On other distros, it's in xfce4-icon-theme, but for Slackware i dont see it on slackbuilds or any other places.

The Rodent theme is incomplete and not shipped with xfce-4.6.x by the upstream xfce team, so we don't ship it either. I put some comments about it in the xfce.SlackBuild script - have a look :-)

off topic,

re: kde4 less resources than 3 <---ummm not here. It takes 325 meg ram with a clean home. Kde3 was about 110 meg of ram.
However, it runs quit well once I get into kde (after the long login) on a p3 with 900 mhz and 512 mb ram. On a box that is 256 mg ram 800 mhz it' a dog. Kde3 ran fine down to 600 mhz with 256 in the past.

on topic,

I normally use xmms. but for those friends/family of mine that find that too minimal, I usually add 'exaile' if you need a music player with a media library. There's a few dep's to build, but it's all pygtk stuff. Note the 'gtk' there. It runs splendid down to a 300mhz machine. It supports multimedia keys too.

I'd recommend pz7ip and it's gui so you get xz support. I like xarchiver, but it hasn't gotten everythng I need yet, it's on my watch list.

don't forget gftp for ftp.

I build/run firefox 3.6beta4 here, and it's very fast on old box. Almost as fast as seamonkey 2.

I'd also add 'xpad' to your list too.

Oh, dont forget inkscape as well.

Liferea for a news reader.

I use icewm for most of my machines with the xfce apps tho. That winds up even faster. I'm 60mb ram when logged in

Yes, well I hope Slackware 13.0 still comes with gFTP

Firefox - as new as I can get it (pretty much standard fare).
Seamonkey 2 - I had Seamonkey 2 when it was prealpha.

Is that anything like mousepad? I think the text editor app has been covered. Thanks anyway.

What is inkscape? Sounds interesting. I'll go check it out.

I don't use news readers.

Now you're talking, I've bee getting very acquainted with IceWM for quite a while now. Which really makes my point here. It's not just the GUI aspect of losing KDE, it's more about losing the applications. I will likely run those applications in another window manager anyway. IceWM Themes are really my kind of eye candy anyway.

Case in point: I installed Kubuntu 9.10 for my Mother which of course has KDE4. I ran it with the compositing turned on to show what her NOW Linux machine could do. Damn thing had it where every time you went to the screen borders, it would go into the "cube" virtual desktop switcher (up, down, side to side, and even the diagonal corners). I admit that I set it up that way, but she (my mother) was not amused. I showed her KDE4, Xfce4, and IceWM. In the end, she went with IceWM, too. IceWM just gets out of our way. Any more eye candy besides Themes, and you're just showing off.

BTW, I am going to go ahead and take (sniff, sniff) KDE 3.5.10 off my Slackware 12.2, then install as much of these other apps I can get my hands on. Considering my current Slackware 12.2 edition my testing ground.

I'd like to take this moment to say "Goodbye, Farewell" to some favorites of mine from KDE 3:
  • Kuickshow
  • Konqueror
  • K3B
  • KSirtet (Tetris look alike)
  • KPDF
  • Klickety (another simple game)
  • Krandrtray

I'm probably missing something. I will miss you immensely. Now I have to prepare myself for the KDE withdrawals.

Ok... in response to the FUDNESS factor...

I just installed Slack13 and KDE on my workstation (after playing with it on a slower comp) and my computer is amd 3200 (2ghz) 2gigs ram, Geforce 8600 GS

It runs smooth and the graphics are slick.

I like the layout and design...

But there are some serious bugs related to configuration. Show stopping bugs.

For example... screen savers config becoming unavailable after setting one time and testing (minor but, not something I would release in a non-alpha state) I havn't tracked down the root cause of this but it has to do with the window crashing when it tries to reload the config data that was previously selected. Probly missed this because it only happens on a few OpenGL screensaver configs.

The biggest one is that going through the menu's to select window styles/etc I selected GTK+ or GTK2 or something with the generic oxygen theme and zoin(reversed) colors and it crashed the entire Xorg system. With an error saying you cannot run that theme with the other... Xorg would not boot back up into a failsafe...

IMO KDE should never let you get into a state picking through default themes pre-installed and pre-loaded to get you to a state where you cannot login to X... (I'm not going to blame this on Xorg or GL because that works flawslessly in every other app then KDE).

SO ya KDE4 while pretty and "easy" to navigate and configure has some very ugly alpha release like bugs...

I know we should be fixing them rather then complaining but the OP has the right idea... XFCE, E17, E16, JWM, Icewm all can look pretty why not use them?

This has been a pretty neat discussion so far, and I've been working with XFCE in Slackware 13 for a while now. I've downloaded and installed a bunch of Robby Workman's extra XFCE packages.

XFCE is pretty darned cool ... except . . . I can't figure out how to easily make the CAPS LOCK key into an extra CTRL key. I use a special keymap for my regular console. In KDE, I simply set it in the settings. But in XFCE, I'm not seeing an easy way to remap the keyboard.

Any suggestions?

I'm not an expert with setxkbmap(1), but I think you'd do it with that.
Once you figure out the right combination (assuming I'm correct), then
you can copy /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/10-keymap.fdi to
/etc/hal/fdi/policy/ and edit it with the appropriate bits.

Hi Robby, I'll give setxkbmap a closer look.

Quick question: if I set the correct options as a HAL policy, will it also affect the text console, or just the X keyboard?

Thanks,

Just X. Perhaps you *could* create a custom hal callout to set the keymap on the console too, but I suspect it to be more work than it's worth... :-)

Great addition to my list. A very Big Thank You for mentioning Exaile. Love it. Especially because it doesn't require KDE.

EDIT:
Gosh, dependency HELL... requiring more Gnome stuff that I thought..
ummm well if i ever get everything, it might just work...

Seriously though!?! I have to download the Gnome VFS?!?!? Not cool to leave that bit out!

Yes there's a few, but really not as many as you'd think, imho slack should just have the whole gio/gvfs it adds so much use to gtk apps and to firefox and seamonkey, but that's a thread for another day. But that exaile is a darn good app

If you're lucky, you'll see glib2 and gtk+2 at their latest stable releases (2.22.x and 2.18.x) in -current relatively soonish. :-)
