Question $DISPLAY is not set?

Hello all, i've got a problem with my X server. When I boot up in init 4, the boot freezes at X startup.
i can only load X with xstart from an tty in init3; when I run kdeinit I got this error message:

Code:
kdeinit:Aborting.$DISPLAY is not set
But when I run X from the tty, $DISPLAY is set up:

Code:
echo $DISPLAY
:0.0
So what can I do to have $DISPLAY set up on startup with init4, again? (I've try to run xorgconfig again, it didn't helped).

you need to edit the init file for runlevel 4, I think in slackware it's /etc/rc.d/rc.4 (but I'm not sure, you may need to dig, sorry)

this is a hack! But it should work for simple stuff, just type into that config file after

#!/bin/bash

but before anything else:

export DISPLAY=":0.0"

(on a separate line)

try it, if it works, great, if not, remove it and ask someone else (:

Try look in /opt/kde/share/config/kdm if there are not .new config files.

no, there aren't any .new files;
Where should this DISPLAY variable be defined, in the first way?

That depends, what session manager do you use (to make sure)? KDM ?

I think the file that set display in KDM is :
/opt/kde/share/config/kdm/Xservers

But when you boot at init 4 runlevel, do you see the
graphical KDM login window ?

When I log on with init 4, the x server crashes instantly, I don't see the KDM login.
As a tournaround, I'm logging in on runlevel 3, then I run startx from the tty.
X doesn't run on runlevel 4.
I've tryied kdeinit from init 3, i still get this message: kdeinit:Aborting.$DISPLAY is not set
