Off to College...Taking Linux With Me...on What?

Hey guys, I got into the Linux scene last fall during my senior of high school. Due to time issues, I left it alone, but over this summer I plan on delving back into it again (probably w/ Slackware). Are there any super Linux-friendly laptops I should be looking at? Or are they all fairly compatible now adays? Thanks ahead!

Here are a list of linux certified/pre-installed laptops. And no, most laptops suck ass. If it isn't a winmodem, it's some other ghetto .dll software driven pile. Be careful when buying to make sure all features are kernel native. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

In my experience, although IBM Thinkpads are more expensive, they are worth every penny and are very Linux-friendly -- J.W.

As indicated in the above replies, it would pay off to do your homework before buying a lappy. A little research will prevent many headaches.

I like the linuxcertified machines, but there are several choices available to you if you do a bit of research.

Also, the newer Dell lappys are supposed to be pretty good, at least for RH & FC.

I personally love Toshibas, but unfortunately, most of what I hear is that they specifically are not too good for Linux. Sigh.

IBMs do have a good rating, but yes, check onlines for any given MODEL you think to buy.

Thanks! I think I'm going with a new Dell Inspiron 600M, as it got rave reviews for Slackware (which I plan on using)...the only bugs were w/ the wireless and monitor power off...but both of those things have fixes already (just need to download them). Thanks for all of the help guys!

I've had horrible experience with my linuxcertified laptop.

List of things which failed:

* power switch (jiggle the power switch, the machine shuts down, instantly)
* battery (won't charge)


Those two things alone are enough to turn me away from linuxcertified forever.

Good to know (just to prevent last-minute switches). Any bad news on Dell 600Ms (preferably the latest model)?
