xinit fails just after Xserver start up, scsi-ide problem while mounting cdrw

Hi all ,
I have installed RedHat 9 on my machine.
I have certain problems .They are as follows
1) startx fails
When i type startx on runlevel 3 my machine tries to start X windows system but fails to do that. i checked out in startx script and found that during xinit it fails just after startting X server, I know this because i see a mouse pointer just before failure as soon as window manger tries to start .
Though I can log in Xwindow after running GDM as root and then can work.

2) GDM starting takes time (3-4min).
When i run GDM it takes 3-4 min time. same is the story with running redhat-config-xfree86.
it give output during ddcprobe(I dont khow about this command)
returned bogus value for horizontal and vertical frequeny.
manually running ddcprobe shows failure in ruuning monitor. and i think here is the culprit for the problem . But dont know how to fix it?

Even after that failure after some time i get Xwindow and can work smoothly there after.
There is no XFree86 problem . No prblem in /etc/X11/XF86Config .

my graphics card has S3TrioV2/Dx /* RH-9 uses "vesa" driver */
and monitor SVGA Extended super VGA 800x600 @60 hz 640x480 @ 72Hz

Though There is no problem with these setting in Mandrake 8.2 and Xwindow starting is fast over there .
I am not able to figure out the reason for this problem.

3) KPPP always asks roots password .
When ever i dial up the KPPP asks root password. I have created file /etc/kppp.allow as told by help file. But its no use.

4) problem mounting cdwriter
I have one CDROM and a CDWRITER . I can mount only cdrom and not write.
While mounting CDwriter /dev/hdc It says
mount : wrong fs type , bad option , bad superblock on /dev/hdc
or two many mounted file systems.

( Could this be IDE device where you in fact use ide-scsi so that sr0 or sda or so is needed.)
Here is the entry in /etc/sysconfig/hwconf
class : CDROM
bus : SCSI
detached :0
device :scd0
desc :"Samsung CD-R/W SW-252F"
host :0
id :0
channel :0
lun :0
generic :0
Please if anybody can explain about this enties and what does this signifies i'll be gratefull to him/her. Thanx in advance

Though in /etc/fstab the entry is
/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom udf,iso9660 noauto,owner.kudzu ,ro 0 0

what is this usf,iso9660 ?
what do i need to change to make it user mountable

5) Is there anything called linuxconf as in mandrke . there is no tools to setup for default OS boot and accessing local files to access windows file system etc.

Please help with these problems
Thank you
Askjha
