Send all processes the term signal...FREEZING

Hi All,

I've been using Red Hat Linux 9.0 for a while now. I'm using KDE and lately it's started freezing a lot. I've been messing around with the Kernel as my senior year project involves kernel programming. Some times it freezes when i'm using firefox. At other times xmms responds slowly. But usually what happens is when i do a reboot....it gets stuck at "Sending all processes the term signal...." and then just hangs there. I have no other option but to turn the machine off and then when i restart it i obviously have to go through the file system check which i reaaaaaaaallly want to avoid because i'm recompiling and rebooting the kernel a lot. What do i do? Any clues? Thanks in advance.
