Odd Gaim Behavior (processes, freezing)

I've noticed that, after a few minutes of using Gaim, more than 80 additional processes are opened (going from an average of 24 in Fluxbox to over 100). "ps aux | grep gaim" as root returns quite a few entries, all looking the same: 0 CPU% but 6.7 Memory usage.

After a bit of investigation, there is a line for every message I send and/or receive -- a new process for every message sound like someting unintentional is happening, especially with the extreme buildup of memory being devoted to such things -- the only time my swap is used seems to be when I've been chatting awhile. I've used slackpkg to update Gaim to the latest release (1.2.1) but the problem persists.

Another issue is when I try to quit. Hitting "Logout" shuts down Gaim without incident, but just hitting close (the X button) logs me out but hangs the program at the login window, keeping the processes alive, requiring a "killall gaim" as root to get rid of the whole mess.

Is this the proper way for the program to work? It seems very counter-intuitive.

Distro: Slackware 10.1
WM: FluxBox 0.9.12
Kernel: 2.4.29
