Problems stopping Samba

Hey guys, I'm trying to get my machine onto the domain. I modified smb.conf after following Article ID: 5787. In that article it says to stop the Samba and Winbind services. I do so by typing: service smb stop. The message I get back is: smb: unrecognized service. Can anyone help me understand what I need to do?

Thanks.

When you su into root user, are you including the '-' after su? This would be my first guess. Use "su -" and let me know if you are able to issue command?

Also if you could post more information on the environment you are in, it would better help to solve.

Look at the output of the command:
chkconfig --list

This will show the services configured. samba might be configured with a service name othen then smb. In addition, samba consists of smbd and nmbd so if it is not configured as a service you can just kill these processes. BTW what Redhat version are you running?

A link to Article 5787 would be nice too.

Figured it out

Thanks guys for your responses. I guess for some reason Samba was not installed my machine. So I installed it with the package manager. Then I had to start the samba service with: service smb start. Then I had to stop the service and it worked:
[root@localhost ~]# service smb stop
Shutting down SMB services: [ OK ]
Shutting down NMB services: [ OK ]

I ran into another problem though when attempting to turn off the winbind service:
[root@localhost ~]# service winbind stop

Shutting down Winbind services: [FAILED]

By the way I'm running Red Hat Linux Enterprise Desktop 5. I'm attempting to get it on a Windows Domain. This is the only Linux machine in the whole network cause I'm testing it out. If you need any other info let me know.

winbind starts

I also forgot to mention that I started the winbind service without any problems:

[root@localhost ~]# service winbind start
Starting Winbind services: [ OK ]

I just have problems stopping the service.
