There is no MP3 support in RedHat 9 because of patent issues, the solution is to reinstall XMMS.
download this, it should solve your problem

i tried all this last night,

tried installing the plugin....didn't work (just double clicked and the package installer ran for a moment then it was done)

tried uninstalling xmms 1.2.7 and then installing 1.2.10 and the package installer kept asking for the package 1.2.7 so i reinstalled 1.2.7 and then tried 1.2.10 and still it asked for the 1.2.7 package...

since i'm a flaming noobie i don't know how to get around this, but i would sure be happy to find out...

this is one of the link from where you can get the plugin... just download this and then take a console and give the following command...
rpm -ivh <the file name of the downloaded file>
this to work u should be in the directory where u have downloaded the file...
this wil work very very well..
